Michael James Flanagan

Michael "Mike" James Flanagan, 78, passed away on Sunday, July 12, 2026, at his home in Germantown, Maryland. Born in Erie, Pennsylvania, on November 25, 1947, he was the son of James William Flanagan and Kathryn Ann (Steimer) Green.

Mike grew up in Massena, New York, where he excelled in academics as well as football, basketball, and baseball until his graduation from Holy Family High School in 1966. He returned to Erie, Pennsylvania, to attend Gannon College obtaining a Bachelor’s in History and a Master's in Counseling.

Mike dedicated his career to education, coaching, and mentoring young people. After moving to Chicago in 1976, he worked at Deerfield High School as a counselor in the Dean's Office, taught summer school Social Studies, and advised student organizations. He spearheaded the Boys Lacrosse team and coached Boys Sophomore Football, Basketball, and Baseball while proudly leading his teams to championship victories. In 2001, he moved back to Erie, Pennsylvania to become the Assistant Principal at Cathedral Preparatory School and coached Boys Junior Varsity Basketball alongside his brother, Brian, who coach Boys Varsity Basketball. After five years working in administration, he returned to the classroom to teach History and received the Golden Apple Award. He moved to Germantown, Maryland in 2018 where he was a substitute teacher for the Montgomery County School System until his retirement in 2020.

Mike was a devoted husband, adoring father, and passionate sports fan. He enjoyed golfing, cooking, gardening, and listening to the Traveling Wilburys. He will be remembered for his kindness, dedication to education, and the lasting impact he made on countless students and athletes.

He is survived by his wife, Susan (Latimer) Flanagan of Germantown, Maryland; daughter, Jessica Flanagan of Chicago, Illinois; brother, Brian Flanagan and sister-in-law, Alice of Erie, Pennsylvania. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his stepfather, Paul William Green.

A private family ceremony will be held. Condolences may be sent to his wife Susan at 18755 Summer Oak CT, Germantown, Maryland 20874 and his daughter Jessica at 300 N. State Street, Unit 5316, Chicago, Illinois 60654.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Johns Hopkins University, The Stroke Foundation, The American Cancer Society, Massena Arts and Theater Association, or Sacred Heart Church in Massena, New York.
