Ethel Bennett Mathis Boyd, affectionately known as “Sing,” was a remarkable woman who graced the world with her presence from March 28, 1928, until August 21, 2025. Born in Manning, South Carolina, Ethel entered the world under difficult circumstances, as her mother passed away during childbirth. She was lovingly raised by her sisters, Susan Bennett Rogers and Louise Bennett Oliver, along with her grandparents, Edwina Bennett and George Washington Bennett, who nurtured her with strength and devotion. From these early experiences, Ethel grew into the epitome of kindness and grace, leaving an indelible mark on everyone who had the privilege of knowing her.
A true matriarch, Ethel’s heart was her most defining trait—the best heart in the world, as many would say. She embodied love and generosity, always putting others before herself and spreading warmth wherever she went. Her spirit was one that welcomed everyone with open arms; she had a unique ability to make others feel at ease, a gift that came from her deep-rooted faith and a loving nature. Ethel was a God-fearing woman, often found praying for those in need, demonstrating her unwavering faith and compassion.
As a mother, she was unparalleled. Her children, Leroy Boyd and Janet Johnson, were the pride and joy of her life. Ethel’s love was boundless, and it is often said that she was the best mother in the world—her nurturing soul shaped their lives and instilled in them the values of kindness and support. Ethel was also a beloved grandmother to Nathan Hebron, Katreece Jones, Georgette Hicks (Keith), and Colleen Jones. Her legacy continued through her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, including Raekwon Jones, Eboni Thomas, Augustina Thomas, Deonte Roberts, Omira Ruff, Sania Jones, Nasir Jones, Daé’Lon, and Donovan. The love she shared radiated through her family—an everlasting bond that will be cherished forever.
Among her many accomplishments, Ethel was particularly proud of her role as an usher at her church, where her unwavering faith and commitment to her community flourished. Her gentle demeanor and nurturing spirit made her not only a cherished family member but a beloved friend and neighbor.
Ethel is preceded in death by her devoted husband, Clarence Boyd, her brother Henry, and her dear daughter, Ethellean Thomas.
