Ina Brosseau Marx

March 10, 1929 — August 27, 2023

Visual and decorative artist, teacher, lecturer, and author Ina Brosseau Marx died peacefully on August 27th, 2023. Born March 10, 1929, in New York City, to Pauline (née Jacobs) and Harry Brosseau, she was the youngest of two children. She is predeceased by her beloved brother, Raphael Brosseau. Ina was a woman of many talents. After having had successful careers as an interior decorator and a couture designer with her own label, Ina undertook an intensive course of study with her mentor, Isabel O’Neil, and became a world-renowned artisan-expert in painted finishes. Her commissions can be found in museums and public and private buildings throughout the world, and she lectured widely to both professional and lay audiences. Ina produced a comprehensive professional video series and co-founded The Finishing School in Great Neck, New York, with her husband, Allen, later joined by their son, Robert. Together, they co-authored two authoritative books in the field, “Professional Painted Finishes” and “Furniture Restoration.”

Ina Brosseau met her husband, Allen I. Marx, on a blind date in 1949. They became engaged the night they met, got married later that year, and remained happily married until Allen’s death in 2021. Together they shared four sons, Mitchell (Penelope Davis, d. 2002; Sherilee Ogozaly) (d. 2017), Russell (Cheryl Tyler), Robert (Michele), and Eric (Susan), six grandchildren, Alessandra Torati (Hezi), Rachel Marx, Gabrielle Marx (Robert Heaton), Sarah Levin (Oded), Rebecca Marx, and Jonathan Marx (Noa), and nine great grandchildren. She will be greatly missed by her family, the leagues of students who were lifted by her self-empowering and transformative teaching, and her colleagues, who were inspired by the insight and knowledge she brought to their collaborations. A celebration of the life of Ina Brosseau Marx will be held Sunday, December 10, 2023. Further details will be shared with Ina’s friends and family closer to the date of the event. In lieu of flowers, the family of Ina Brosseau Marx asks that you consider donating in her name to the arts organization of your choice.
