Cory Arthur Johnson

1966 - 2024

Cory Arthur Johnson, age 57, passed away on May 7, 2024 at his home in Washington, D.C. Born on October 5, 1966, Cory led a life marked by academic excellence, professional achievement, and a dedication to justice.

Cory's academic journey began at Duke University, where he earned his undergraduate degree in Economics. He continued his education at the London School of Economics and further enriched his knowledge at Vanderbilt Law School. His academic pursuits laid the foundation for a distinguished career in law.

Cory's professional life was as varied as it was impressive. He began in private practice in Chicago, where he honed his skills and built a reputation for his legal acumen. Next, he served the community of Florida in the State Attorney General's office, where he was known for his dedication to justice and public service. Cory's commitment to the law culminated in his work as a trial attorney in the Court of Federal Claims Section with the Department of Justice’s Tax Division starting in 2005. He became a Senior Litigation Counsel in 2010. Cory was a uniquely talented trial attorney and, in recognition of that skill and dedication, he received the Distinguished Senior Professional Presidential Rank Award in 2021, the only litigating attorney in the DOJ to receive the honor that year.

Anyone who worked with Cory, whether colleagues, opposing counsel or judges, learned he was a highly skilled and effective litigator. Over the years Cory successfully handled some of the Tax Division’s most novel, complex, and high-profile cases. Those who worked on a trial team led by Cory received a master class thanks to his guidance, example, and notable leadership. He was a friend and mentor to many in the Tax Division, and Cory could always be counted on to give his honest counsel, sometimes with a bit of sly humor.

Outside of his professional life, Cory was an avid reader which contributed to his reigning champion status in family Trivial Pursuit games. He also loved to golf, spending many weekends on the course with friends, both old and new. Cory had a passion for music and enjoyed attending concerts, creating lasting memories with friends through many Grateful experiences. He was also an accomplished skier who was always willing to hit the slopes whenever possible, and in his spare time was a master chef who could whip up delicious dishes.

Cory was preceded in death by his parents, Allen Michael Johnson and Susan Cory Johnson. He is survived by his brother, Eric (Magy) Johnson, and his sister, Kirsten (Joe) Stewart. Cory also leaves behind his nephews, Jack Stewart (24) and Josh Stewart (21), and niece, Camille Johnson (17), and many extended family members.

His family remembers his sharp wit and no nonsense approach, but mostly his steadfast presence as a loving and devoted brother and uncle, whose wisdom and kindness touched their lives deeply.

A gathering for family and friends may be planned for a later date.

We invite you to join us in honoring the memory and life of our loved one on this dedicated memorial page. Your condolences, stories, and pictures will be cherished by the family and will provide comfort during this difficult time.
